I suppose you might call this half-photo, half-manipulation.

The original shot was composed with a blue sheet of card placed in the background. The end result was actually quite a flat-looking photo.

I made a quick dash outside to shoot some lovely summer sky, then layered it onto the original shot. I definitely feel it gives it the kick it so needed by helping to lift out the colours in the lower half of the image.

For reference, here was the non-manipulated version (oh, how the magic is ruined!);

Of course, it’s all subjective. Did I make the right choice, or do think it works better sans sky?

    Jina, I bow down to your genius. That is all.

      Genius? You must have me confused with another Jina ;)

      Thank you, Humaira :) It’s a pity I didn’t think to set the shot up outside in order to negate the need for manipulation, but hindsight is cruel!

    Both are great shots, but you get more of that summer vibe from the top one. You’ve done a fantastic job on post-production with the shot!

    Maybe with more natural lighting, the original non-manipulated one could have had that extra something you wanted?

    • Jina says:

      Thank you, Jaina. :D

      Yes, in hindsight I could have done it all in-camera. I really don’t know why I didn’t try! I could have propped the whole setup high enough to have the sky as the backdrop. I may actually try that when the weather here goes back to being heatwave-y.

      • Jaina says:

        Oh awesome! Looking forward to seeing that :)

        Hey… would it be like asking a magician the secrets to their tricks if I asked if you could pop a photo up of your set up?

        • Jina C says:

          Ha! Like I have photography secrets. ;)

          I reckon I could do that. Although I may need a little clarification on ‘set up’?
